Silo Replacement in Belfast

Delivering Under Pressure: IJB Engineering’s Successful Silo Replacement Project in Belfast

When tight deadlines meet complex engineering, only precision, experience, and innovation will get the job done. That’s exactly what IJB Engineering brought to the table when they were commissioned to carry out a full replacement of ageing silos and associated infrastructure at a busy industrial site in Belfast.

The brief was clear, but the challenge was significant: remove the old silos and gantry system and replace them with Rowlands Woodhouse newly fabricated units—all within a limited time frame and on a site with restricted space. With minimal margin for error, this project showcased the best of what IJB Engineering offers: efficient project planning, bespoke manufacturing, and expert on-site assembly.

The Challenge
The existing silos had served their purpose but were now outdated and in need of replacement to meet modern operational standards. The site was not only active and in use, but also space-constrained, leaving very little room for fabrication, storage, or extended assembly work. Add to this the challenge of adhering to strict deadlines, and you have the type of high-stakes project that demands precise execution from start to finish.

Phase One:

Safe Removal of Old Infrastructure
The first task for the IJB team was the safe and controlled removal of the old silos and the existing gantry system. Working within a tight footprint, our crew carefully dismantled the aging structures without disrupting surrounding operations.

Removing such large structures requires more than just brute strength—it demands a strategic approach. Every bolt, bracket, and beam was dealt with methodically, ensuring safety remained the top priority. Once dismantled, the materials were efficiently cleared from the site to make way for the next stage of the operation.

Phase Two:

Off-Site Fabrication with Rowlands Woodhouse Equipment Ltd
Due to the limited working space at the main site, the decision was made to fabricate the new silos off-site. We were proud to collaborate with the fantastic team at Rowlands Woodhouse Equipment Ltd, whose workshop—located just 300 metres from the installation site—was perfectly suited for the job.

The silos were manufactured to exact specification in Rowlands’ facility, drawing on their expert craftsmanship and capabilities. Quality and durability were essential, and every component was built not just to meet industry standards, but to exceed them. The combined efforts of IJB and Rowlands ensured the units were delivered on schedule and ready for seamless installation.

If your site requires custom-built industrial units—whether it’s silos, tanks, or specialist steelwork—our team at IJB Engineering can deliver precision tailored to your exact needs.

Phase Three:

On-Site Delivery and Assembly
Once fabricated, the next challenge was transporting the new silos from the workshop to the installation site. While the short distance may seem simple on paper, moving large, heavy units through narrow industrial access routes requires precise coordination. Road closures, delivery timing, and lifting operations all needed careful planning.
With our experienced transport and rigging teams at the helm, the silos were safely moved to the site and positioned for assembly. The full build was carried out on location with meticulous attention to detail. Our skilled fitters and welders ensured the units were erected safely, securely, and aligned perfectly with the existing foundations.

Phase Four:

Installing the New Gantry and Access Systems
With the new silos in place, the final piece of the puzzle was the addition of a new gantry system and access ladders. This infrastructure not only supports the day-to-day operation of the silos but also ensures worker safety and compliance with access regulations.

The new gantry was custom-designed to fit seamlessly with the silos and surrounding structures. It was fabricated, delivered, and installed with the same care and precision as the silos themselves. Every rung, platform, and handrail was double-checked to meet both safety standards and our own rigorous quality benchmarks.

Meeting the Deadline

One of the standout aspects of this project was the timeline. From initial planning to final installation, the schedule was tight and left no room for delays. Thanks to clear communication, strategic planning, and the dedication of our team—and the valued support from Rowlands Woodhouse Equipment Ltd—the entire job was completed on time and on budget.

This kind of efficient delivery is what clients have come to expect from IJB Engineering. We understand that in today’s industrial environment, downtime is costly and delays are unacceptable. Our commitment to smart planning and fast execution is what allows us to take on projects of this scale with confidence.
