IJB Engineering is proud to be an integral part of the Frogmore Paper Mill restoration project, a significant endeavor aimed at preserving and revitalizing this historic landmark in Hemel Hempstead. Frogmore Paper Mill, renowned as the birthplace of paper’s industrial revolution, suffered extensive structural damage due to a devastating fire in 2022. The restoration of this iconic site has been a complex and challenging project, but our dedicated team at IJB Engineering has been committed to restoring the mill to its former glory over the past 18 months.
Roof Replacement: The fire severely damaged the roof of the mill, leaving the structure exposed to the elements. Our team meticulously replaced the entire roof, ensuring it met modern safety standards while maintaining the historical integrity of the building. The new roof not only protects the mill but also enhances its overall aesthetic, staying true to its original design.
Asbestos Removal: As part of our commitment to safety and health, we managed the careful removal of asbestos from the building. This hazardous material posed significant risks, and our team followed stringent safety protocols to ensure its safe and thorough removal. This crucial step was necessary to make the environment safe for future restoration work and for those who will visit the mill once it reopens.
Window Fabrication and Replacement: One of the critical aspects of the restoration was making and replacing all windows in the mill. Our skilled craftsmen created windows that replicated the original designs, using modern materials to improve energy efficiency and durability. The new windows not only enhance the building’s appearance but also contribute to its overall structural stability.
Electrical Rewiring: The fire left the mill’s electrical system in disarray. We undertook a comprehensive rewiring project, installing modern, safe, and efficient electrical systems throughout the building. This included updating lighting, power outlets, and other electrical components to meet current standards and ensure the safety of the mill’s future operations.
Structural Securing: Securing the ailing structure was paramount to prevent further damage and ensure the safety of the restoration team. Our engineers implemented advanced techniques to stabilize the building, reinforcing its foundation and critical support structures. This work was essential to create a safe working environment and to preserve the integrity of the mill for future generations.
CDM Management: Effective Construction Design and Management (CDM) was a cornerstone of this project. Our team oversaw all aspects of the restoration, coordinating between various contractors and stakeholders to ensure the project adhered to all regulations and safety standards. Our CDM management ensured that every phase of the restoration was executed smoothly, on time, and within budget.
At IJB Engineering, we are dedicated to delivering high-quality engineering solutions while preserving historical integrity. The Frogmore Paper Mill restoration project exemplifies our commitment to excellence and our ability to handle complex, large-scale projects. Through meticulous planning, skilled craftsmanship, and unwavering dedication, we have made significant strides in bringing this historic landmark back to life.
The restoration of Frogmore Paper Mill is not just about repairing a building; it’s about preserving a piece of history for future generations to appreciate and learn from. As we continue to work on this project, we remain focused on maintaining the highest standards of quality and safety. We look forward to the day when the mill can reopen its doors to the public, standing as a testament to the power of restoration and the importance of preserving our heritage.
